BYD Shakes the EV World: 2nd Gen Blade Battery and 5-Minute Flash Charging Explained

BYD Blade Battery and FLASH Charging technology has revolutionized EV charging with rapid, efficient performance and improved cold-weather capabilities.

The electric vehicle industry has reached a historic turning point in 2026. BYD, the global leader in new energy vehicles, has officially unveiled its highly anticipated Second Generation Blade Battery alongside the groundbreaking "FLASH Charging" technology. This release directly addresses the final hurdles of EV adoption: charging anxiety and cold-weather performance.
Breaking the Speed Barrier The core highlight of this announcement is the "FLASH Charging" system. Leveraging a massive 1500 kilowatt (1.5 megawatt) output, the technology allows vehicles to charge from a 10 percent to 70 percent State of Charge in a mere 5 minutes. Reaching a 97 percent charge takes only about 9 minutes. This effectively makes recharging an electric vehicle as fast as refueling a traditional internal combustion engine car.
Advanced Materials and Thermal Management The Second Generation Blade Battery utilizes a Lithium Manganese Iron Phosphate (LMFP) cathode chemistry, which increases energy density by approximately 5 percent to 20 percent compared to traditional Lithium Iron Phosphate. To ensure safety during such rapid energy transfer, BYD integrated a "Lithium Ion High-Speed Channel" and a "Full Spectrum Intelligent Thermal Management System." These innovations reduce internal resistance by 50 percent and minimize heat generation.
Defying the Cold Cold weather has long been the Achilles' heel of EVs. However, BYD's new system demonstrates remarkable resilience. In extreme temperatures as low as minus 30 degrees Celsius, the charging time from 20 percent to 97 percent only experiences a 3-minute delay compared to room temperature. This breakthrough is set to transform the EV experience in northern climates.
The 1,036km Milestone When equipped with this new battery, flagship models like the Denza Z9GT can achieve a staggering range of 1,036 kilometers on a single charge. Combined with BYD's plan to deploy 20,000 flash-charging stations by the end of 2026, the ecosystem for long-distance electric travel is finally complete. Safety remains the ultimate luxury, as the battery passed the rigorous nail penetration test even after 500 rapid charge cycles.
