Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, the world's leading semiconductor foundry, has officially revised its 2026 capital spending budget upward to a range of 60 billion to 64 billion U.S. dollars, escalating from its previous estimate of 52 billion to 56 billion U.S. dollars. This substantial expansion in capital allocation is primarily driven by rising equipment costs, advance payments for critical manufacturing machinery, and insatiable global demand for artificial intelligence chips.
In parallel with its expanded capital expenditure budget, TSMC is dramatically increasing its manufacturing commitment in the United States. The company announced an additional 100 billion U.S. dollars investment focused on its Phoenix, Arizona campus, elevating its cumulative planned investment in the state to 265 billion U.S. dollars. This updated strategic plan expands the site footprint to accommodate up to ten semiconductor fabrication facilities, two advanced packaging plants, and a dedicated research center. The Arizona mega-site will focus on leading-edge logic chip manufacturing at the 2-nanometer node and below, alongside state-of-the-art advanced packaging technologies.
For the second quarter of 2026, TSMC posted record-breaking financial results. Quarterly revenue surged 36 percent year over year and 12 percent sequentially to 1 trillion 270 billion New Taiwan dollars, equivalent to approximately 40 billion U.S. dollars. Operating margin reached an impressive 60.3 percent, supported by high factory utilization rates and robust operational performance. Crucially, revenue generated from TSMC's next-generation 2-nanometer process technology was recognized for the first time, contributing 3 percent of total wafer revenue in its debut commercial quarter. Advanced process technologies, defined as 7-nanometer and beyond, now account for 77 percent of total wafer revenue.
This capital boost underscores the ongoing multi-year expansion of the global artificial intelligence infrastructure, where high-performance computing represents 66 percent of total revenue. As sub-2-nanometer nodes require advanced lithography equipment, ultra-pure silicon materials, and complex thermal management compounds like silicon dioxide dielectric insulation, TSMC's multi-billion-dollar investments reinforce its pivotal role in the global technology supply chain.
