AI memory chip manufacturing expansion is at the forefront of SK hynix's new strategic developments. With the exponentially growing demand for artificial intelligence capabilities, SK hynix is investing 54.3 trillion Korean won to enhance its semiconductor manufacturing in South Korea. This significant investment is split between the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster and the Cheongju site, marked by an emphasis on high-density Dynamic Random-Access Memory (DRAM) and High Bandwidth Memory architectures for Yongin and advanced NAND flash production for Cheongju.

Yongin Semiconductor Cluster

At the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster, the company is preparing to erect its second fab phase, known as Y2, within a 1.13 million square meter facility. The Y2 project will commence in July 2027, targeting a fully operational cleanroom by June 2029. This expansion aligns with SK hynix's strategy to accelerate its target for completing all cluster fabs from 2045 to 2033, crystallizing its commitment to advancing AI memory chip manufacturing expansion.

The initiative at Yongin focuses on enhancing the delivery of high-performance computing solutions by leveraging its newly designed master plan. The strategically located Yongin site is crucial in supporting globally competitive semiconductor capabilities.

Cheongju NAND Flash Manufacturing

Simultaneously, SK hynix is fortifying its presence in Cheongju with the expansion of its NAND flash manufacturing to cater to high-capacity enterprise solid-state drives (SSDs). The anticipated M17 fab is set to span approximately 680,000 square meters. Construction is scheduled to begin in February 2027 with initial operations forecasted by December 2028. This addition signifies another vital step in SK hynix's AI memory chip manufacturing expansion strategy.

The Cheongju expansion will also streamline existing processes by integrating with pre-existing units including M11, M12, and M15, thereby optimizing logistics, power management, and throughput. This comprehensive approach embodies SK hynix's dedication to enhancing its infrastructure for sustained growth in AI memory solutions.
