China's solar energy landscape reached a historic milestone in 2025, recording an unprecedented annual installation of 317 gigawatts. This surge was primarily driven by a massive rush in the first half of the year, which saw 212 gigawatts added to the grid. However, the market experienced a significant cooling period in the latter half, with installations dropping to 103 gigawatts. This dramatic shift was largely influenced by changes in government subsidy policies, particularly those targeting large scale commercial facilities.
A peak of 93 gigawatts was reached in May 2025 as developers raced to complete projects before the policy transition. Following this peak, monthly installations plummeted to just 14 gigawatts in June, with the third quarter totaling only 28 gigawatts. Industry experts note that as the era of aggressive capacity expansion concludes, the focus is shifting from quantity to quality. This transition aims to address grid constraints and improve the economic efficiency of solar projects.
Looking ahead to 2026, forecasts suggest a stabilization period with projected installations between 180 and 240 gigawatts, representing a year on year decrease of approximately 24 to 43 percent. This adjustment period is seen as essential for the long term health of the industry, as it moves toward market based pricing and high efficiency technology such as N-type monocrystalline silicon cells and advanced thin film applications.
