BASF has marked a significant milestone in the battery materials sector with the initial delivery of cathode active material (CAM) to Beijing Welion New Energy Technology in China for their semi-solid-state batteries. This delivery was facilitated through BASF Shanshan Battery Materials Co., Ltd. (BSBM), a joint venture between BASF and Ningbo Shanshan.
To address the critical issue of the interface between the cathode active material and the solid electrolyte, BSBM developed an ultra-high nickel NCM cathode active material featuring a proprietary multi-composite coating layer. This innovative approach successfully improves cycle stability and calendar life while simultaneously allowing for an increase in energy density.
The Senior Vice President of BASF's Battery Materials business unit stated that this achievement is a crucial milestone for their battery materials business and represents a significant leap forward in the solid-state battery domain. The company is committed to strengthening its cooperation with Welion and aims to achieve further breakthroughs in solid-state battery technology. This initial delivery underscores BASF's dedication to supporting the transition to next-generation battery technologies that are essential for the future of e-mobility and sustainable energy storage.
