Infineon Technologies has officially opened its flagship Smart Power Fab in Dresden, Germany, ahead of the original schedule. Representing a monumental investment of five billion euros, this facility marks the largest single investment in the company's history. Backed by approximately one billion euros in public funding under the European Union Chips Act, the new plant doubles Infineon's manufacturing capacity at the Dresden site and creates roughly one thousand high-tech jobs. It will specialize in manufacturing advanced power semiconductors and analog mixed-signal chips using three hundred millimeter wafers.
The facility integrates cutting-edge digital twin technology and artificial intelligence algorithms to optimize production workflows, allowing manufacturing speeds to increase up to two times faster than traditional methods. The Dresden fab is also digitally linked to Infineon's site in Villach, Austria, under a One Virtual Fab network to accelerate product qualification cycles. These advanced power devices, crafted from silicon and silicon carbide materials, will serve critical high-growth sectors including artificial intelligence data centers, software-defined vehicles, industrial power grids, and renewable energy infrastructure.
In line with global sustainability goals, the Smart Power Fab operates completely without natural gas. It incorporates closed-loop water treatment systems that recycle approximately ninety percent of process water and recovers up to forty-five percent of its operational energy. This strategic expansion not only strengthens Europe's semiconductor supply chain resilience but also provides essential power efficiency hardware for the global digital and green transition.
