Wolfspeed Consolidates SiC Device Production to New York 200mm Fab

Wolfspeed, a global leader in wide-bandgap semiconductors, has officially completed the restructuring of its manufacturing footprint. In a strategic move to optimize operational efficiency and drive higher margins, the company has consolidated all of its silicon carbide device fabrication into the state-of-the-art Mohawk Valley Fab located in New York. This facility operates exclusively on 200mm, or eight-inch, silicon carbide wafers, representing the industry's most advanced manufacturing standard for power semiconductors.

Concurrently, Wolfspeed has shuttered its legacy 150mm, or six-inch, wafer fabrication lines at its Durham facility in North Carolina ahead of the originally anticipated schedule. Moving forward, the Durham campus will pivot into a dedicated materials research and development hub. The equipment and skilled personnel from the legacy line have been redeployed to accelerate the commercialization of Wolfspeed's next-generation 300mm, or twelve-inch, silicon carbide substrates.

The Chief Executive Officer of Wolfspeed stated that the phased retirement of the 150mm production lines marks a critical milestone, solidifying the company's full transition to a more scalable 200mm manufacturing architecture. This shift significantly enhances Wolfspeed's competitive edge in cost efficiency and production yield. While market analysts point out temporary uncertainties in automotive demand across various regions, Wolfspeed is aggressively targeting key global automotive manufacturers and high-growth electric vehicle markets to secure long-term, high-volume supply agreements.
