Intel has officially announced a capital commitment of 5 billion euros to scale up manufacturing capacity at its Leixlip campus in Ireland. The strategic expansion primarily targets the Intel 3 process node, which operates at the 3 nanometer class technology level, to fulfill accelerating global demand for server computing chips, including the flagship Xeon 6 series and next-generation data center processors.
The expansion project leverages existing cleanroom space within Fab 34, incorporating state-of-the-art semiconductor fabrication tools and extreme ultraviolet lithography infrastructure. Key operational enhancements include consolidating multiple facility modules and expanding overhead automated material handling track systems to maximize wafer throughput and operational efficiency.
This massive investment underscores Intel Foundry's commitment to offering leading-edge silicon manufacturing for both internal products and external foundry clients. The move follows Intel's repurchase of Apollo Global Management's 49 percent equity stake in Fab 34 for 14.2 billion US dollars, returning the premier European wafer fab to 100 percent Intel ownership. With over 30 billion euros invested in Ireland since 1989, this new commitment reinforces Europe's central role in advanced semiconductor supply chains.
