The global race for next-generation solar technology has reached a significant milestone. JinkoSolar, one of the world's largest solar module manufacturers, has announced a certified power conversion efficiency of 34.82 percent for its self-developed perovskite-silicon tandem solar cell. This achievement, officially certified by the Shanghai Institute of Microsystem and Information Technology under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, breaks the company's own previous record of 34.76 percent.
Tandem solar technology works by stacking two different light-absorbing materials. In this device, a top cell made of perovskite absorbs high-energy blue and green light, while a bottom cell made of crystalline silicon targets the lower-energy red and infrared spectrum. By splitting the solar spectrum, tandem cells can bypass the theoretical efficiency limits of conventional single-junction silicon cells.
JinkoSolar achieved this performance leap by integrating several advanced technologies. Key upgrades include a dual-layer composite passivation contact structure for the bottom n-type tunnel oxide passivated contact cell, also known as TOPCon. Additionally, the team applied multidimensional interface passivation, gradient crystallization kinetics control, and enhanced optical coupling technologies to reduce energy loss and improve light absorption.
This milestone is particularly meaningful because it is built upon the n-type TOPCon platform. Since TOPCon is already the mainstream technology in commercial manufacturing plants worldwide, utilizing it as the bottom cell paves a clear and practical pathway for future large-scale industrial production of high-efficiency tandem solar modules.
