STMicroelectronics Unveils 800V Direct Power Conversion for AI Data Centers

 

As Artificial Intelligence (AI) workloads continue to surge, the demand for more efficient power delivery in data centers has reached a critical turning point. STMicroelectronics has announced a breakthrough in power management technology by introducing a direct DC-to-DC conversion solution designed specifically for AI data centers. This new product family enables the conversion of 800V DC power directly down to 12V or 6V, supporting the high-power requirements of next-generation processors and Graphics Processing Units.
This innovation is based on the NVIDIA 800V reference design, marking a significant departure from traditional power architectures. Conventionally, power is stepped down in multiple stages, often involving an intermediate 48V or 54V rail. By eliminating this intermediate stage, the 800V to 12V direct conversion reduces the number of conversion steps and minimizes system-wide energy losses. This streamlined approach significantly improves overall rack efficiency and reduces the amount of copper wiring required within the server infrastructure, leading to lower costs and improved thermal management.
The implementation features high-density power supply boards that achieve efficiency levels surpassing traditional two-stage configurations. As AI clusters scale toward megawatts of power consumption, reducing conversion loss is no longer optional—it is a necessity. Industry analysts expect this direct-to-chip power delivery method to become the mainstream standard for future Graphics Processing Unit generations, providing the robust energy foundation needed for the evolution of large language models and intensive computing tasks.
