The transition to eight inch silicon carbide wafers marks a significant step for STMicroelectronics as they aim to enhance their production capabilities in the semiconductor industry. By the end of June 2027, the company plans to upgrade from six inch wafers to eight inch wafers, a move expected to optimize manufacturing efficiencies and support the increasing demand for silicon carbide devices across various industries.
As part of this strategic shift, STMicroelectronics is transitioning their production from legacy six inch silicon carbide manufacturing lines in both Catania, Italy, and Singapore, to a consolidated facility that fully integrates substrate growth to module packaging. This new state-of-the-art facility, known as the Silicon Carbide Campus, is located in Catania, Italy. Through this vertically integrated supply chain, STMicroelectronics aims to reinforce its leadership position in the semiconductor market.
Simultaneously, the company is focusing on catering to the Asian electric vehicle market by implementing a dual track strategy specifically for China. The eight inch silicon carbide wafers will be produced locally in China through a joint venture with Sanan Optoelectronics. This collaboration will lead to the establishment of a new fabrication plant in Chongqing, which will primarily serve Chinese automotive and industrial sectors.
Besides silicon carbide innovations, STMicroelectronics is also expanding its gallium nitride product range. Their Catania facility will concentrate on gallium nitride fabrication, while collaborations with firms like Innoscience will facilitate local production for the Chinese market. The launch of OmniGaN, which harnesses groundbreaking technology to surpass the seven-volt breakdown voltage limit traditionally associated with gallium nitride transistors, indicates the company's commitment to advancing their technological front.
Additionally, STMicroelectronics is scaling its series such as MasterGaN and VIPerGaN, integrating key functionalities like gate drivers and control logic to enhance energy efficiency and performance. Overall, through advancements in eight inch silicon carbide wafers and the expansion of their gallium nitride portfolio, STMicroelectronics is positioning itself as a pivotal player in the future of semiconductor technologies.
